26-November-1949 | India has a parliamentary system of government with certain similarities to the US system. There are two houses - a lower house known as Lok Sabha (House of People) and an upper house known as the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). The Lok Sabha has 544 members (excluding the speaker) and the Rajya Sabha has 245 members. Election for the Lok Sabha is held every five years, unless the government calls an election earlier. All Indians over the age of 18 have the right to vote. The Lok Sabha can be dissolved but the Rajya Sabha cannot. There are also state governments with legislative assemblies known as Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad. The two national houses and the various state houses elect the Indian President, who is a figure head, but the Prime minister wields the real power. |
