Charming images of Princess Diana comforting her tearful young bridesmaid were published for the first time this week.
For everyone in the photograph the 1981 wedding was a time of joy but what did the future have in store?
1. PRINCESS DIANA
The fairytale of becoming a royal bride when barely out of her teens did not last.
Diana did her duty producing an heir but Charles eventually rekindled his romance with Camilla Parker Bowles.
The unhappy Princess had a string of affairs before her death in a Paris car crash in 1997, aged just 36.

2. CLEMENTINE HAMBRO
Clemmie, the sobbing bridesmaid, was Diana’s favourite pupil at her former workplace the Young England kindergarten in London’s Pimlico.
She went on to drama school and worked in the US as an actress where she called off her wedding to a financier weeks before the big day.
She eventually married Orlando Fraser, the son of historian Antonia Fraser, in 2006. The couple have three children and Clemmie, 39, a great-granddaughter of Winston Churchill, now lives in London and writes about gardening.

3. THE QUEEN
Her son’s marriage to Diana preceded a time of turbulence for the monarch.
The marriages of three of her children broke up in 1992 hitting the popularity of the monarchy and that same year a devastating fire broke out at Windsor Castle.
However Elizabeth oversaw a gradual upturn in fortunes culminating in her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the marriage of grandson William.
Next month the Queen, 89, will overtake Victoria as our longest reigning monarch.

4. EDWARD van CUTSEM
Page boy Edward, aged eight at the time of the wedding, is a godson of Charles.
He went to Eton and in 2004 married Lady Tamara Grosvenor, the daughter of the Duke of Westminster who is one of Britain’s richest men.
Prince Charles reportedly declined his invitation because Camilla, who was not yet his wife, was required to sit at the back of the church.
The couple have two sons and Edward, who works in banking, is a close friend of Princes William and Harry.

5. FRANCES SHAND KYDD
Diana’s mother hit the headlines in 1988 when her second husband Peter left her for a younger woman.
In later life she was known for her charity work, including taking disabled people to Lourdes.
She survived a bad car crash in 2002 and there was also the indignity of a drink-drive conviction in 1996.
She became a Roman Catholic and lived alone in a bungalow in western Scotland, where she died in 2004 aged 68.
Friends said she never got over the loss of Diana and became a virtual recluse.

A teenager at the time of the wedding, Edward went on to study history at Cambridge.

10. PRINCE CHARLES
The match with Diana proved to be a disaster and he eventually turned to his old flame Camilla.
The infidelity of the heir to the throne threw the monarchy into crisis – Charles and Diana announced their separation in 1992 and were divorced four years later.
Following Diana’s death there was widespread opposition to Camilla but the couple won the public over, marrying in 2005.
At times Charles has appeared to struggle with his role as heir and he has recently faced allegations of meddling in politics but he has slowly regained his old popularity.
11. DUKE OF KENT
The Queen’s hard-working first cousin is perhaps best known for presenting the trophies at Wimbledon.
The Duke, now 79, suffered a stroke three years ago but made a full recovery.
A few years ago it emerged that he had an illegitimate half-brother.

12. EARL SPENCER
Diana’s father Earl Spencer gave the bride away, something friends were concerned he wouldn’t be able to do having previously suffered a brain haemorrhage, but the day went well.
After his divorce from Frances, “Johnnie” Spencer as he was known had a happy second marriage to Raine McCorquodale, previously the Duchess of Dartmouth and the daughter of Barbara Cartland, although relations were frosty between her and Spencer’s children.
Spencer died of a heart attack aged 68 in 1992.

13. THE QUEEN MOTHER
A sprightly octogenarian , the Queen Mother initially took Diana under her wing.
But following the divorce relations cooled. Diana believed the Queen Mother plotted against her; the Queen Mother considered Diana indiscreet.
She died in 2002 aged 101.

The 11-year-old son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent was another page boy.
He later studied theology at Oxford but dropped out and was cautioned for possession of cannabis.
In 2001 he converted to Catholicism, forfeiting his right of succession to the throne and, five years later, married Countess Paola Doimi de Lupis.
The couple, who live in Italy, have three children.

15. SARAH-JANE GASELEE
Bridesmaid Sarah-Jane, then aged 11, regarded Diana as her “big sister”. She worked in the hotel industry before marrying film producer Paul Andrews.
Now 45 and a mother of two she divides her time between their plantation home in Barbados and London, where she hosts upmarket tours of Diana’s old haunts.
She claims to be a “leading authority” on the Princess and trips are “the next best thing to a day out with Diana herself”.
