Stamp Information:VEER NARAYAN SINGH A great son of the Mahanadi VAlley and the soil of Chhattisgarh, Veer Narayan Singh Binjhwar was born to the Zamindar of Sonakhan in 1795. In 1856 when Chhattisgarh was in the grip of severe famine the merchants hoasted grain, Narayan Singh could not tolerate seeing people die of starvation. He sought to borrow grain from merchants as 'Barhi' and ultimately, performing the duties of a 'Kshetra Pramukh', he arranged to take out grain from the warehouse and distributed it amongst the people, under intimation to Charles Elliot, the Deputy Commissinor of Raipur. But on the complaint of Makhan, a merchant, the British Governmnet arrested Narayan Singh on 24th Oct. 1856 at Sambalpur and sent him to jail at Raipur. In 1857 when the flame of revolution was ignited in the country, it lit sparks in the forest-region of Chhattisgarh and the people unanimously elected the imprisoned Narayan Singh as their leader. With the help of soldiers and the public, Narayan Singh escaped from the jail in August, 1857 and reached Sonakhan. He organised his trusted followers and had an encounter with the British army near Sonakhan. He was moved by the atrocities and the acts of devastation and destruction of the British. He surendered himself to the British army to protect the lives of the people. Narayan Singh was charged with treason and sentenced to death. He was publicly executed on 10th December, 1857. He sacificed his life willingly for the country. The army contingent stationed at Raipur and the public revolted at Raipur, on 18th January, 1858 under the leadership of Hanuman Singh. A British Officer was killed. People were inspired by the immortal sarifice of Veer Narayan Singh and seventeen of them were sentenced to death on 22nd JAn. 1858. Their sacrifice, like Veer NArayan Singh's martyrdom, was a memorable event in the history of Chhattisgarh which gave momentum to the freedom movement.

रायपुर। स्वतंत्रता दिवस के मौके पर dainikbhaskar.com आपको बताने जा रहा है हमारे अमर शहीदों के बारे में। जिन्होंने अपने देश के लिए अपने प्राणों को भी न्यौछावर कर दिया। कई बार इन्होंने अंग्रेजों को नाको चने चबाने को मजबूर किया। एक ऐसे ही वीर हैं छत्तीसगढ़ की माटी में पैदा हुए शहीद वीर नारायण सिंह। इन्होंने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ मोर्चा खोलकर उन्हें सेना समेत खदेड़ा था।
नारायण सिंह का जन्म रायपुर जिले के बलौदाबाजार में हुआ था। इनके पिता रामसाय जमींदार थे। इन्होंने भी अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ आवाज उठाई थी। उस समय तत्कालिक कैप्टन मैक्सन ने विद्रोह को दबा दिया। बिंझावर आदिवासियों के दम पर रामसाय का प्रभुत्व बना रहा और अंग्रेजों ने इनसे संधि कर ली। पिता की मौत के बाद वीर नारायण सिंह जमीदार बन गए। इन्होंने 1856 में अकाल पड़ने पर अपने समर्थकों के साथ लालची व्यापारी के गोदाम पर हमला बोला और सारा अनाज गरीबों में बांट दिया। अंग्रेजी सल्तनत को यह रास नहीं आया। अंग्रेज तो इनके ऊपर कार्रवाई करने का बहाना ही ढूंढ रहे थे। नारायण सिंह को बंदी बना रायपुर जेल भेज दिया। इस समय इन पर लूटपाट और डकैती का आरोप लगाया गया था।
सैनिकों के लिए थे प्रेरणा स्त्रोत
हिन्दू और मुसलमान सैनिकों में उस समय अंग्रेजी हुकूमत के खिलाफ विद्रोह की अग्नि धधक रही थी। वीर नारायण सिंह को इन सैनिकों ने अपना नेता चुना। सन 1857 में जेल में बंद क्रांतिवीरों और जनता की मदद से वीर नारायण सिंह जेल से भाग निकले और सीधे सोनाखान पहुंचे। वहां की जनता ने इन्हें हाथों हाथ लिया क्योंकि इनके लौटने से उनका मनोबल लौट आया था। यहां की जनता अंग्रेजी राज से निजात पाने के लिए कुछ भी करने के लिए तैयार थी। बस जरुरत थी तो बारूद में चिंगारी भरने की। जो काम वीर नारायण सिंह ने किया। इसी समय इन्होंने 500 सैनिकों की एक सेनी बनाई, और अंग्रेजों पर हमला बोल दिया।
