UN urges observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27
Various UN Agencies and the nations who were engaged in the Second World War are going to observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27th January to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust that resulted into the death of an estimated 6 million Jews, 1 million Roma, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.
The observance was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. One may recall that it was on 27 January 1945 that the Auschwitz-Birkenau - the largest Nazi death camp - was liberated by Soviet troops.
According to UN Chief, Ban Ki-moon, there was a need to go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history and apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today's world so that all peoples may enjoy the protection and rights for which the United Nations stands. The call or the elimination of any State or people was unacceptable, he maintained.
The UN has urged Member States to develop educational programmes through its outreach programme to instill the memory of the tragedy in future generations to prevent genocide from occurring again by instituting measures to mobilise civil society to help prevent future acts of genocide. It needs to be remembered that the Holocaust was a turning point in history, which prompted the world to say "never again".
