Jayant Salgaonkar (1 February 1929 – 20 August 2013) was an Indian businessman, historian, scholar, and writer. He was the founder of Kalnirnay.[1]

Education and career[edit]

He only completed up to tenth grade in high school. He had keen interest in Jyotish from childhood. He founded Kalnirnay in 1973, selling over 10 million copies in nine languages.[citation needed] Kalnirnay is a yearly almanac of all religions containing details of auspicious dates, festivals and celebrations of Farsi, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindu and others.[2] He had done a combination of jyotish, information and dharmashstra. He was the pioneer of the daily Rashi Bhavishya and the daily crossword in the Marathi newspaper.

Death[edit]

Jyotirbhaskar Jayant Salgaonkar died in the Hinduja hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness.[5]

Kalnirnay (translation in Marathi : timely decision) is a popular calmanac (Calendar +Almanac) used in India. As per the Audit Bureau of Circulation (India), it is the world’s largest selling publication, with a circulation of 1,81,87,168 copies[3]

History[edit]

Kalnirnay was founded in 1973 by Jayantrao Salgaonkar, an astrologer from the Konkan belt of Maharashtra.[4] It initially started as a hand-printed almanac for Marathi subscribers. The first issue was sold to 10,000 subscribers. It gradually grew to become the largest selling[5] publication in the world, with around 19 million copies being sold annually.
Its website was launched in 1996, its desktop e-version (e-kalnirnay) was subsequently launched, and it is now available as an android and iOS application.

Publication and Contents[edit]

Kalnirnay is published annually, by Sumangal Publishing, as a calendar almanac for all Indian religions.[6] It contains auspicious dates, festivals and celebrations of HindusMuslimsChristiansSikhsJainsBuddhistsParsis and Jews are mentioned in detail. It also provides useful information about Daily Panchang, Shubh Vivah Muhurat, Sankashti Chauturthi Chandroday Timing, Daily Sun Rise – Moon Rise Timings, Monthly Astrological Predictions for all Zodiac Signs, etc. It is published in seven languages - EnglishMarathi,HindiGujaratiTamilTelugu and Kannada, with marathi accounting for the bulk of its readers.[7]

In addition to dates and times of religious and cultural relevance, each issue also contains articles on topics such as health, food and beauty.[8]
